ESSILOR TO BUILD NEW PRODUCTION FACILITY IN LAOS

The world’s leading ophthalmic optics company, Essilor, is very interested to invest in building a new facility for producing polycarbonate eyeglass lenses in Savannakhet province.

The company is in the process of collecting detailed information related to a land concession and workforce to supply the industry.

Projects Director of Worldwide Operations Mr Gerard Malledant recently called on Deputy Prime Minister Somsavat Lengsavad, who is in charge of economic affairs.

Mr Malledant informed the Deputy Prime Minister that Essilor intended to invest in building a new facility for producing polycarbonate eyeglass lenses in Savannakhet province.

The Deputy Prime Minister commended the move and reaffirmed that the Lao government would facilitate the Group’s investment as envisaged. In this regard, the Group had further given detailed information that in fact, Essilor, as the world leader in ophthalmic optics had already started the in the special economic zone of Savan-Seno, near the provincial capital of Savannakhet. This facility, which will be dedicated to producing polycarbonate eyeglass lenses for which the market is growing by 5 percent a year, will start production in the second half of 2013 and will employ 250 people in its first phase.

The Group chose the location on a 6 hectare site in the Economic Development Zone in Savannakhet province due to the efficient road and air transportation, and its proximity to the Group’s production facility in Bangkok, which will allow the sharing of expertise and training and an abundance of efficient energy supplies.

It will allow the Group to expand its production capacity in optimal operating conditions.

Essilor also plans to take part in the creation of a Professional Training Centre in Savannakhet province which would help to provide competencies corresponding to new industrial needs.
